The proposed itinerary includes a 13 km route along the Aurelia, following the coast from Santa Severa and Civitavecchia. The surprises come directly from the landscape, which preserves a multi-millennial history
Along this coastal route, you will find numerous reminders of the Etruscan presence in the area. You will come across the remains of two important sanctuaries such as those of Pyrgi and Punta della Vipera, as well as some Necropolises such as those of Scaglia and Marangone. It was then the Roman emperor Trajan who promoted major works in the area of present-day Civitavecchia where the military camp of Castrum Novum already existed. In addition to his own splendid residence, known as Villa pulcherrima , he built the port of Centumcellae and the Terme Taurine.
The area maintained great importance even in the Renaissance when it was under the dominion of the Church. This is evidenced by the fortification systems protecting the coast, from Michelangelo's fortress to the dense network of watchtowers and castles located along the coast. The route ends with the protected nature reserve La Frasca.
