The castle overlooking the lake
The Sumptuous Castle of Bracciano dominates both the village and the lake it overlooks. Its mass is clearly visible thanks to the towers placed at the coners of the fortress and thanks to the imposing decoration with battlements. The castle is currently open to the public and, thanks to organized visits, can tell six centuries of history among ancient weapons, funishings and original frescoes.
The manor was built after 1470 by Napoleon Orsini, probably with the collaboration of workers already working on the construction of the Vatican rooms. Initially, the structure belonged to Braccio da Montone, of the Bracci family, who, at the Pope's request, were forced to donate it to his subordinate Captain Orsini. Proof of this is the coat of arms of the municipality, an arm holding a rose (one of the symbols of the Orsini family). Napoleon's brother, Cardinal Latino Orsini, was the chamberlain of Pope Sixtus IV, who in those same years was building the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Today, the Castle is owned by the Odescalchi family, a noble family who took over the Duchy of Bracciano from the Orsini family at the end of the 17th century. Thanks to the scrupulous attention paid by Prince Baldassarre Odescalchi to the conservation and enhancement of the artistic and cultural heritage, the Castle has retuned to being the protagonist of Bracciano. This commitment has allowed over the years to restore beauty to the mighty stones, splendor to the ancient halls, quiet and elegance to the sumptuous gardens.
In particular, the visit to the 20 rooms on two levels of the piano nobile represent one of the best examples of a noble apartment of the Renaissance. The succession of rooms, antechambers, studies and halls are decorated with frescoes and original funishings. A jouney that will take you through the lives of the characters who made the history of the Renaissance and the moden age.
