Saint Severa
A holiday village that holds a past millenary
The seaside resort of Santa Severa is a hamlet of Santa Marinella. It was founded in the 1930s as a summer residence for numerous fascist leaders. Today it is a popular destination for Romans who can choose between free and equipped beaches. The nerve center of the town is certainly the seafront, where you can walk while enjoying the silhouette of the Santa Severa Castle as an inimitable backdrop.
The houses built for the creation of the seaside village in the 1930s were part of the “Cooperativa 28 Ottobre”. At the beginning there were very few houses, all single-family villas. In the second half of the 1960s the Pio Istituto di Santo Spirito, owner of the Castle at the time, ordered its renovation. The northenmost location called “Grottini” was also built, in reference to the rocky coast below. Today the inhabited part of Santa Severa extends along the coast for about 3 kilometers: the medieval castle represents the southen border while the beach of the so-called “grottini” represents the northen border. The villas and small houses are arranged in tree-lined avenues that are animated only in the summer months. Visiting the village could be the right opportunity to stop in a central place and enjoy the slow life of the typical Roman summers.
