The Baths of Trajan
The archaeological site of the Terme Taurine stands on a hill surrounded by greenery, about 5 km from the center of Civitavecchia. Also known as the Baths of Trajan, they are one of the most important thermal complexes of the Roman era in all of southen Etruria. The site of the Terme Taurine is mainly divided into 2 areas: one from the Republican era (1st century BC) built in opus reticolatum and one from the Imperial era (2nd century AD) built in brick.
In the countryside, just north of Civitavecchia, stands the complex known as the Terme Taurine. According to legend, a sacred bull, scraping the earth before a fight, had caused a source of hot sulphurous water to spring forth here and since the Etruscan era in this area there were already rudimentary spas, but only the specific experience of the Romans allowed them to exploit the therapeutic qualities of these sources.
The entire complex covers an area of about two hectares and is in a good state of conservation. The first nucleus dates back to the late Republican era (or the very early years of the Empire) while in the Flavian and Trajan eras everything was significantly expanded to the dimensions now visible which make the Taurine Baths one of the largest archaeological complexes in Lazio.
