A lunar landscape
La Frasca is a protected natural monument located 9 km north of Civitavecchia, it is an incredible place, to be visited in all seasons; both by diving enthusiasts for the numerous Roman remains of the port of Columna and, when the season does not allow a swim in the sea, for an almost magical walk among the pine forest and the archaeological finds. The beach is not sandy, but is made up of rocks that are a mix of sand, marl and clay.
Covering approximately 73.77 hectares, Frasca is an area of significant naturalistic interest as well as landscape and historical-archaeological. The continuous erosion of the sea has produced a jagged beach composed of small bays and inlets, ideal for snorkeling lovers thanks to a beautiful rocky seabed, natural habitat of numerous species of fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Its coast, in fact, is formed by rocky expanses made of scale, which, sculpted by the incessant work of the sea, make up a series of inlets and small bays, where crabs, shrimp and many other reef animals abound. A rare example of biodiversity, the entire Frasca area is characterized by a coastal forest environment that boasts the presence of 45 different species of birdlife. Facing the coast, inland, there is a splendid pine forest that in summer offers a cool shelter from the heat, ideal for a pleasant picnic in the open air.
The name Frasca probably comes from the fishing activity.
