A town located between the Tolfa mountains that preserves the remains of an ancient village
The remains of the abbey are located on the slopes of Mount Piantangeli; some of its wall structures are still visible, allowing us to understand the plan of the ancient building. To reach the location, you need to move away from the village of Tolfa and enter the most suggestive area made up of Turkey oak woods. You can reach what remains of the abbey via a circular route that starts from Casale del Tecchio
The ruins of the Pietrangeli Abbey were excavated by the Superintendency in 1974. The church has three naves, culminating in three apses, of which the central one is twice as wide as the lateral ones. The naves were divided into three bays, marked by columns and semi-columns. We are faced with a basilica-type layout, probably dating back to the 12th century, probably built on an older building. In correspondence with one coner of the building, the remains of the bell tower can be seen, of which only the foundations remain. At the centre of the main nave, in front of the space identifiable with the old presbytery, some parts of the wall can be seen forming a quadrangular enclosure. The shape, the location, some sculpted panels, the dimensions suggest an original destination as a probable "schola cantorum". The most important finds, currently exhibited in the museum of Tolfa, are the capitals recovered during the excavation of the Superintendency
