Sumptuous Roman villa on the Marina di San Nicola seafront.
To reach the remains of Pompey's villa, you can easily leave your car at the Marina di San Nicola seafront and proceed towards the freely accessible structures. The route is marked by a brick path.
The Roman villa of Pompey dates back to the time of Emperor Augustus (1st century BC) and was inhabited until the 5th century AD. The structure is located on the top of a slight natural sandstone promontory and its extension measures approximately 2 hectares. The porticoes with the bases of the columns in brick covered in white stucco and some rooms with walls with decorated plaster remain of the villa. The structure that best conveys the majesty of the villa is certainly a very long semi-buried corridor of 150 meters extension currently visible only through a gate. The main nucleus of the house has an imposing rectangular plan. The presence of Etruscan materials found in the area suggests that the construction was built directly on the remains of a previous settlement from the Etruscan era.
