A thick forest on the outskirts of the town of Allumiere, the perfect destination for nature lovers
The area of the Faggeto di Allumiere was established as a Natural Monument for its significant naturalistic interest. The forest covers an area of about 100 hectares and is also home to numerous alunite quarries. Once you reach the central square of Allumiere, you can easily reach the forest either by car or on foot, walking about a kilometer towards the eastern outskirts.
The Faggeto di Allumiere area is a territory characterized by peculiar ecosystems and a rich flora and fauna biodiversity. In particular, the flora features species typical of temperate climates such as beech, maples, hornbeams, butcher's broom and holly together with Mediterranean elements such as laurel and holm oak. The presence of dormice, weasels, martens, badgers, and numerous species of birds such as the blue tit, the great tit, the honey buzzard is reported. The area also includes the largest hibernating colony of bats in Lazio known to date. In the forest there are also the alum quarries, which have made the town famous. The Cava del Silenzio, also known as Cava del Moro, and the Miniera di S. Barbara testify to the use over time of two different methods of extraction of the mineral. Furthermore, this area is of significant archaeological interest: on Mount Elceto there is one of the largest proto-Villanovan settlements in the area where there are traces of metallurgical activities, demonstrating the preference of settlement choices towards naturally defended areas in mining areas. The area is crossed by easy paths that allow for a pleasant walk.
