The past that emerges between moden streets
The necropolis is located outside Civitavecchia. To reach it, you need to go north, towards Sant'Agostino. Exactly where Sant'Agostino is, after a few dozen meters on the left, there is a path that leads to the Necropolis of Scaglia. The name of this location is linked to the fact that the Villanovans already exploited the quarry of scaglia, an excellent building material.
The visit to this small necropolis is very interesting because it is possible to observe the development of various burial techniques, in the most archaic tombs dating back to the 9th century BC, consisting of a quadrangular well, inside which the biconical vase containing the ashes of the deceased was placed. There are also tombs from a later period with a pit, in which the body was laid dressed and with its jewels, it was then closed with a slab of material existing on site. Later these pits were increasingly enlarged to place funishings that the deceased brought with him for his life in the afterlife. Towards the end of the 7th century the tombs would have taken the form of real rooms that imitated the homes of the living. The later tombs are large rooms with two beds. Some tombs, however, do not have funeral beds, because the deceased was laid in a sarcophagus.
