A small gathering place nestled in the village walls
The Church dedicated to Sant'Antonio Abate is very small, it is located near the medieval walls. It was presumably built in the 11th century, the exterior is articulated with a small staircase that leads to a terrace on which there are three small windows and the entrance door to the Church. Next to it you can see the presence of a structure that has been interpreted as the bell tower of the ecclesiastical complex.
The structure was originally part of a larger monastic complex, of which unfortunately not many traces remain today, but which must have extended at least as far as the current Via dell'Arco Scuro. Over the centuries, the building has undergone many renovations. Its interior, with three naves, is marked by quadrangular pillars on which the arches of the walls of the central nave rest.
The side aisles have a barrel vault, while the central one has a truss roof. The mural paintings inside are not attributable to a single decorative campaign.
Among the oldest decorations, the 14th century frescoes can be recognized, located to the left of the apse, which represent New Testament scenes. In particular, an Ecce Homo, the Flagellation and the Crucifixion. The latter is only partially visible because it is covered by a much more moden image depicting St. Anthony.
