The church in the main square of the town of Allumiere
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in cielo is located in a dominant position, in the central Piazza della Repubblica, the hub of Allumiere. The monumental aspect is also underlined by the staircase that must be climbed to enter the Church
The church consists of three naves and has a high façade with a very simple design. There are three entrances in the façade. The building was constructed in 1608 at the request of the mining contractors, by the noble Olgiati family, who replaced a small chapel that was located near the alum factory. Initially the church consisted of a single central nave and depended on the church of Sant'Egidio Abate in Tolfa. Gradually it became more and more independent, until it became an autonomous parish in 1752. Towards the end of the 19th century the church was expanded with the construction of the side naves.
