Medieval village and Etruscan antiquities.
Visiting Cerveteri you can travel through time to discover the Etruscan people and also the medieval era. Traveling along the road that climbs the gentle slope towards the tuff spur that once housed the acropolis of ancient Caere, the small medieval village appears unexpectedly, protected by crenellated walls, from which you can look out towards the coast of Etruria.
The vast tuff plateau that was chosen for the location of the acropolis of ancient Caere hosted one of the most prosperous and important coastal metropolises of the ancient Mediterranean since the 9th century BC. With the Roman conquest of Etruria the area became mainly an agricultural centre.
Beyond the Borgo, at a distance of about 1.5 km, it is possible to visit the Necropolis of Banditaccia, which preserves thousands of tombs organized in a similar way to an urban plan, with streets and neighborhoods. The site, which covers 20 hectares, dates back to the 9th century BC and contains various types of tombs. It is one of the largest necropolises of antiquity currently known, and is a reproduction of the "city of the living". By tackling a trekking path of a few hours, it is possible to reach the Cascatelle di San Giuliano, characterized by a drop of about thirty meters.
