A Roman colony a stone's throw from the beach.
To reach Castrum Novum you need to go past the central part of Santa Marinella and continue along the Aurelia towards Civitavecchia. Just before leaving the residential area of Capo Linaro, at Km 64 on the left there is a wrought iron gate thanks to which it is possible to enter the area where the remains of the Roman colony came to light. The beach in front is very characteristic thanks to the presence of wooden stilts, built to expand the space close to the coast.
After leaving your car in the square next to the service center, you can proceed towards the upper part of the promontory, where excavations organized by the Municipality of Santa Marinella are underway.
Thanks to the presence of volunteers from the Cerite Territory Archaeological Group (GATC), it is possible to participate in guided tours organized periodically. The structures still visible make it clear the strategic importance of the site for the control of the coast. Currently, the entire settlement has not yet been brought to light, which was probably frequented until the 5th century AD. Surely at the moment the most evocative part is located towards the northen edge of the excavated area, where it is possible to observe what remains of the theater structure. In fact, admiring the majesty of these structures, it is also easy to reconstruct the evolution of the colony that from a defense point organized around a central nucleus of "small barracks" expanded to house a building for theatrical performances. Unfortunately, only the lower parts of the walls built following the trend of the promontory towards the sea remain of the structure. Many statues from Castrum Novum are currently located between the Vatican Museums and the Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia.
