The Castle overlooking the sea
A village that still today preserves the charm of centuries of history. The Castle of Santa Severa stands directly on the coast about 50 km north of Rome. It can be considered the perfect destination for those who want to immerse themselves in history as well as in the clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The view of the Castle can range from insights related to the Etruscans, underwater archaeology, passing through the history of Christian martyrs without excluding the possibility of exploring a nature reserve
Reaching the Castle of Santa Severa is very easy, starting from Rome you just need to follow the Aurelia for 50 km north. At the signs for the Castle, leave the state road and take the tree-lined avenue that leads to the sea. Before heading to the beach, a visit to the Borgo del Castello di Santa Severa is a must. Inside the village you can visit three different museums, an archaeological area and a watchtower of early medieval origin. Although from the outside the building identified as the Castle may seem to be only the part closest to the sea, made up of the Rocca, in reality it is necessary to refer to all the buildings enclosed by the medieval walls that make up the entire Borgo del Castello. Once you enter through the monumental portal you can visit the courtyards of the trotters and the Barrozze, respectively the first on the left and the second on the right beyond the Museo del Mare, to enter the heart of the environment created in this place by the Pio Istituto del Santo Spirito, owner of the village from 1482 until the 80s of the twentieth century. Proceeding towards the sea along the avenue of the Castle before entering the area of the Rocca you pass by the Spianata dei Signori from where you can see in the distance the archaeological area of Pyrgi overlooking the sea.
Afterwards, entering the area of the Rocca you can admire the excavations of the Paleo-Christian Church and the Casa del Nostromo.
