Land of fire
A visit to the Canale Monterano Nature Reserve offers the opportunity to discover very different scenarios and landscapes. Getting to the Reserve is really easy, proceeding on the Aurelia you need to turn off at the road to Sasso a Furbara, proceed beyond Manziana and the current village of Canale Monterano to get to the Reserve Visitor Center where you can get brochures and detailed information for the various itineraries.
The Reserve covers an area of just over a thousand hectares where the lush nature is crossed by the slow flow of the Mignone river, flanked by a solfatara and where the ruins of the ancient abandoned village of Canale Monterano are directly linked to the testimonies of the Etruscans told by the necropolises. The Reserve contains an inestimable heritage in terms of biodiversity and culture: you can visit hilly woods, volcanic gorges, pastures and meadows. In the Reserve, immersed in a territory of volcanic origin, there are numerous mines for the search for sulfur, manganese and uranium, as well as springs from which underground gases bubble. The vegetation consists of beech and turkey oaks, poplars, willows and hazelnuts, together with strawberry tree bushes. As for the fauna, the forest is inhabited by hares, wild boars, foxes, hedgehogs and wild cats, while in the waters of the Mignone you can find moorhens and mallards.
